HARRISBURG -- Jay Paterno has dropped out of the Democratic race for Pennsylvania lieutenant governor.

Paterno said conversations with his lawyers have convinced him that trying to overcome challenges to his nomination petition would be a long process that would distract from the campaign.

In a release to his supporters, Paterno outlined his concerns.

"With less than two months remaining before the primary I do not want an ongoing legal back and forth to be a distraction in this race," Paterno wrote. "The outcome of this election is too important for the future of the working families and all the people of this Commonwealth."

Just after 4 p.m. Friday, Paterno tweeted, "There are times in life when personal ambition should give way for the good of the whole."

Paterno is the son of the late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.
