Community sending care packages overseas

Updated:

By: Kerri Corrado

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. -- A Jefferson County community is doing its part to help our troops overseas. The McDonald's in Punxsutawney is gathering items to send care packages to those serving around the world.

"[We're doing this] to let them know that we are thinking of them on Memorial Day," said McDonald's General Manger Karen Love. "We are not going to be out eating cheeseburgers without thinking of them."

A collection drive is underway to collect non-perishable items at their McDonald's location at 102 N. Findley St.

"It gets us involved in the community. We do so much, we want to get involved and get the community involved," said swing manager Cheyenne Helman. "It shows that we are not just a fast food restaurant."

The items will be packaged and sent to troops this Memorial Day. So far, there has been an outpouring of support. Tables are full of non-perishable items, although they are still in need of donations.

"A lot of guys over there do not get mail, they do not even get a letter or let alone a box like this," said swing manager Sherry Huber. "For us to send it to them personalized, it means a lot."

Donations will be accepted throughout the week.
