WINDBER, Pa. -- One woman, Patti Simanski, who had a vision to help overweight children become healthy, has pursued that vision.

"I have been working in the medical field and it just so happens there was a need for education of weight management," Simanski said.

With the help of doctors, local businesses and the community, a new center is to open up in Windber sometime during the summer.

The facility, open to children ages 10 to 17, will be called All About Kids Fitness, offering education about fruits and vegetables while also hosting exercise programs. This is to help all of the children reach their weight goals.

"It's unbelievable the things that we take for granted like children that come to me don't know what a jumping jack is or how to jump rope," Simanski said. "The kids aren't comfortable there because of all of the adults. All of the people who are already physically fit and need to go somewhere where they can share common goals and problems."

Organizers are still in the process of raising money for the facility that is to be built on Graham Avenue in Windber, Somerset County.

A walk is also being held so the community can get involved in the project. It will start and end at Martellas Pharmacy in Windber at 1pm. Registration starts at 11am. Children and teens are selling a cookbooks for $5, filled with healthy recipes to raise money too.

Donations for the facility are being accepted at any First National Bank or if you have comments, questions or want to buy a cookbook you can contact Simanski.
