CONEMAUGH TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Investigators in Somerset County are working to reconstruct a vehicle accident, which has been called a "freak" incident, that left two children dead, according to police.

Conemaugh Township Police Chief Louis Barclay said two children were killed, two children were injured and two adults were injured in the accident that happened just before 3 p.m. on Route 403 Monday.

Barclay said a preliminary investigation showed a tree fell from alongside the roadway and crashed onto a passing car. He said the force of the crash then caused the vehicle to collide with a nearby telephone pole.

The adults in the vehicle, a man and a pregnant woman, were taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center for treatment of their injuries, Barclay said. Their medical conditions were not immediately known.

Barclay said the two injured children were taken to an area hospital to be evaluated. Witnesses said they did not appear to be seriously hurt.

Barclay said the woman was the mother of the four children. The connection she and the children had to the man in the car was not immediately known.

The names and ages of those involved were not being released by police. Barclay said the man was driving the car.

Barclay said a Pennsylvania State Police accident reconstruction unit was working to further the investigation into the crash.
