BANKS TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

One person was killed in an early-morning collision in Indiana County on Thursday.

Stephen Robert Yamrick, 22, of Glen Campbell was killed when the Dodge Ram pickup truck he was driving reportedly crossed the center line of Route 36 in Banks Township and collided head-on with an oncoming coal truck, Indiana County Coroner Michael A. Baker said.

The crash happened near the Jefferson and Indiana County line around just before 7 a.m. in the area of Harkle Road.

The coroner said Yamrick was on his way to work when he collided with the coal truck. The collision resulted in the ignition of diesel fuel from the coal truck, causing both vehicles to become engulfed in flames.

Yamrick was killed on impact due to multiple blunt-force trauma and the coroner has ruled his death accidental. The coal truck driver tried to rescue Yamrick, who was trapped in the wreckage of the pickup truck, but could not.

The coroner did not know the identity of the coal truck driver and had no information about if he was injured.

The initial call to the Clearfield 911 Center was received at 6:57 a.m.

Firefighters from numerous departments provided fire suppression and traffic control at the scene. State police from the Punxsutawney station investigated the circumstances of the accident, and Indiana County hazmat personnel provided containment and cleanup of diesel fuel from the roadway. The Rairigh Funeral Home in Hillsdale is in charge of arrangements for Yamrick, the coroner said.

State Route 36 was closed in both directions between Harkle Road in Banks Township, Indiana County; Bell Township, Clearfield County; and Clover Run Road in Gaskill Township, Jefferson County.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said police directed traffic using local roads for a detour.
