CHARDON, Ohio --

A student who witnessed a deadly Ohio school shooting said it appeared the gunman was targeting a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table.

One student was killed and four injured after a student opened fire at a northeastern Ohio high school in Chardon, about 30 miles east of Cleveland, around 7:30 a.m. Monday.

WJAC-TV's sister station, Channel 11 News in Pittsburgh, reported that 16-year-old T.J. Lane is accused of the shooting.

Police said a teacher chased the student gunman from the building while students said they barricaded themselves in classrooms as the school was placed in lockdown. The Geauga County sheriff said the teen gunman turned himself in to bystanders about a mile away from the school in Chardon Township.

Police said the lone gunman opened fire in the high school's cafeteria where students gathered for breakfast before the school day began.

During a noon news conference, police said three of the victims were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center and two of the victims were taken to Hillcrest Hospital.

According to Hillcrest Hospital officials, a 17-year-old male victim is listed in serious condition and an 18-year-old female victim is listed in stable condition.

Police said the student victims were found in three locations inside of the school.

Freshman Danny Komertz, 15, said he was just about to leave for his first-period health class Monday when he heard a loud popping sound and then saw the gunman open fire.

He said one student who authorities said was killed was trying to get under a table to protect himself and shield his face.

Komertz said the shooter was known as an outcast who had apparently been bullied.

Komertz said that there were at least 100 students in the cafeteria at the time and that most fled immediately as shots were fired.

Another student who was just feet away when the gunman opened fire at the high school said a normal morning was interrupted by strange sounds in a hallway, then the sight of the gunman beginning to shoot.

Junior Heather Ziska, 17, said she was outside the school's cafeteria Monday at about 7:30 a.m. when she and other students began hearing popping noises in a nearby hallway.

Ziska said she then saw a boy with a gun who she recognized as a fellow student come into the cafeteria and start shooting.

Ziska said she and several others immediately ran outside, while other friends ran into a middle school and others locked themselves in a teachers' lounge.

Senior Jonathan Sylak was near the cafeteria when he heard loud popping noises followed by people screaming and beginning to run.
