CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. —
The largest yard sale in the state and east coast of the country may be in jeopardy.
For the last 15 years the 100-mile yard sale has brought in thousands of people to Clearfield, Elk and Cameron counties.
The yard sale, which is typically held in July is a free event to attend.
However, people that want to set-up during the yard sale weekend must pay a small vendor fee.
For seven dollars, organizers said that covers the cost of advertising throughout the entire year for the sale.
"Anyone that wants to make a nickel can set up in it and it helps non-profit organizations, fire departments, churches and everything else. It's good for the area, period," said Raymond Savel, president of the Quehanna Industrial Development Cooperation.
Savel said that during the last 15 years organizers of the yard sale have never been able to break even or profit from collecting money for advertising.
Savel said that is is getting to be costly and is hurting the organization.
"Seven dollars is very cheap, but the thing of it is, we need that seven dollars," said Savel.
Savel said that is disappointing that the yard sale is so successful, yet they are unable to make any money.
"I have record sales during that weekend. I don't know anyway to say it, if it were to end, it would really hurt the business a lot, " said Vicky Lupold owner of the Quehanna Motor Lodge.
Savel said that they believe they can hold the yard sale in 2013 but they really need people to start paying up.
"We're doing the leg work for them and we're just hoping they can help us out a little bit. Pay the seven dollars, that's all we're asking," said Savel.
The Quehanna Industrial Development Corporation will be holding a meeting on Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Quehanna Motor Lodge to discuss the future of the sale.
