$20 Million Needed For Flight 93 Memorial

SHANKSVILLE, Pa. —

With the capital campaign for a permanent Flight 93 memorial still $20 million short of its goal, there is now a renewed push for contributions.

Currently, the site draws more than 250,000 people a year. Officials said they expect more people to visit the site once the memorial is complete.

The executive director of the Somerset Chamber of Commerce said the group is working hand in hand with the Flight 93 Foundation. Currently, their efforts lag compared to other memorials remembering Sept. 11, 2001. Construction is under way at ground zero in New York and a memorial has already been dedicated at the Pentagon.

Still, visitors said the Flight 93 site is different.

"I kind of like that the area has been untouched or messed with in any way," said Douglas Vardon, a visitor. "But at the same time, what they have planned is also very nice, too."

The $20 million the capital campaigns is trying to raise is needed to create the Field of Honor and make sure it's protected. It will also help provide education by telling the story of Flight 93.
