$20,000 Raised To Save Bandshell

Cambria County —

Luke Speicher, of Somerset County, gave the group a check for $20,000 dollars Friday. Speicher's donation has put this shy Somerset County man in the spotlight. Over the summer, Speicher talked with Channel 6 News about his fondness of the Bandshell and the history of it.

Group members who are trying to save it say Speicher loves the Bandshell, had some money in savings and thinks it is a good cause. He took a certified check to the courthouse around noon Friday. The money will cover what the city wants as a bond. However, the city plans to keep fighting. The group will discuss where things stand and what their plans are.

Mark Danko is head of the group trying to save the Bandshell. He tells Channel 6 News, "I was floored, stunned and happy. I feel like we've, the people, the city, this is a win-win. I think that God is wonderful. It was a gift from God to the people of Johnstown today."

Jeff Silka, Johnstown's City Manager, says, "We have signed a contract and we have a responsibility to go forward. The contract was signed prior to any action being taken."

A hearing on this case will be held in November. Nothing is planned to happen until then. Speicher was unavailable Friday afternoon to talk about his contribution.
