Cambria County —
There is some good news for tax payers. This year's budget will not warrant a tax increase, or any layoffs. Commissioners tell us they were able to balance the budget in a realistic manner that allows many programs to keep the majority of their funding. This is a much different story, than a few years ago when the county almost went bankrupt and needed a 9-mill tax hike to stay afloat.
"The county had to go through a major tax increase two years ago and 1-mill increase last year. That was necessary since the county's bond rate was falling. They were on the verge of bankruptcy. Something had to be done. This board took that mission on," says Michael Geiles, Cambria County finance director.
The commissioners also made a special note that, for the third year in a row, they will not be receiving a pay raise. The final budget proposal will be officially adopted on December 16th.
