30 Years Later, Interstate 99 Completely Open

After years of waiting, the four-lane highway connecting Altoona to State College opened Monday.

State officials cut the ribbon officially opening the final stretch on Interstate 99 in Centre County, including the southbound lanes from State College to Port Matilda.

The project first began three decades ago and has cost the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation millions of dollars to build.

Concerns over acid rock delayed the project in recent years. State officials said the new highway is not only safer and faster for drivers, but it will also attract new businesses to the area.
