Officials at the United States Postal Service announced Tuesday the department might close as many as 3,700 post offices nationwide.

WJAC-TV went through the list of targeted post offices and found that 39 are in the Alleghenies.

The cash-strapped USPS said it was targeting rural post offices that don't do a lot of business.

Postmaster General Patrick Donohoe told the WJAC-TV Washington, D.C., bureau that the postal service will instead team up with local retail stores to offer basic services, like stamps, packaging and P.O. boxes.

Donohoe said a new plan for the postal service would include "village post offices" in these stores to offer the services.

"What we didn't want to do is say you didn't have enough traffic, see ya later," Donohoe said. "The idea is we don't have enough traffic to support a regular post office, but we'll put something in place that gives you that same service."

Post office officials said they will take comments from people in the affected communities for a few months before making any final decisions.
