5 storm-related deaths reported in Pa., including woman in Somerset Co.

By WJAC Web Staff and The Associated Press

A woman in Somerset County is one of five people in Pennsylvania who died as a direct result of a hybrid storm still lingering over much of the state.

In Somerset County, snow and a slushy mix of snow and water coated the roads and caused slick travel conditions. Because of the inclement weather in the county, the woman was killed in a crash along Route 281 in Upper Turkeyfoot Township.

State police said she was a passenger in a car in which the driver lost control on the snow-covered, slushy road and the car overturned into a pond.

An 8-year-old Susquehanna County boy died when a tree limb fell on him, and in Berks County, a 62-year-old man was killed after a tree fell atop his house.

In addition, a man trimming a tree in preparation for the storm fell and died in Lancaster County. A 17-year-old riding an all-terrain vehicle in Lehigh County died after striking a fallen tree during the storm.

About 2,000 Pennsylvania National Guard members are working around the state Tuesday and power outages still stand at nearly 1.3 million, but officials say the worst is over.

Gov. Tom Corbett says about 600 people are in shelters statewide following warnings of flood dangers and evacuations. He urged residents to stay home while road and utility workers assess damage.

The National Weather Service says breezy and rainy weather will persist through the day but wind gusts aren't likely to top 30 mph as the storm's center churns through central Pennsylvania.

Corbett said Tuesday morning it's too early to know whether Pennsylvania will get the major disaster declaration it's seeking.

He said that President Barack Obama expressed concern about outages, and that the full damage to Pennsylvania isn't yet known because the storm is still slowly making its way north up to New York.
