Johnstown —
The list shows the 50 dirtiest power plants in the country, some of which are in Pennsylvania. The group putting the list together is Environmental Integrity Project in Washington D.C. The group has actually postponed the release of the list but Channel 6 News has learned the power plants being named in our area. Theyre judged on the amount of Mercury, Sulfur Dioxide, and Carbon Dioxide they let into our atmosphere.
Channel 6 News has learned that 9 power plants in Pennsylvania are among the 50 dirtiest. In our area there are the Homer City Generating Station in Indiana County and the Keystone Energy Plant in Shelocta. This is the second year Keystone has been on the list.
EIP says the entire list should be out next month. Their reason for doing this is to let people living near those sites know what's in their air. They also hope policy makers will make sure these sites are clean.
