6 News Consumer Investigation: 10 Things to Never Buy Generic

By Robin Taylor

While buying generic can save you money, when it comes to quality you may be losing big

Topping our list of “10 Things to Never Buy Generic” is paint.  The experts at consumer reports said the cheap stuff just doesn't cover as well or hold up over time.  Their top rated paint is Behr which is sold at home depot.

"it may be a little bit more expensive than some of the other paints, but you're only going to have to put on one application in most circumstances," said Chris Edwards, Home Depot.

At number two: grass seed.  Bargain bags may contain weeds or grass that will die by next season.  The experts at home depot told me you should consider a good brand with fertilizer.

"You're probably going to get a little less coverage, but you're not going to have to spend as much time maintaining it," said Edwards.

At number three: gas grills.   Cheap grills use cheap parts.  Experts say plan on spending at least $150 for a grill that's built to last.

Number four: mattresses.  A cheap mattress could leave you with years of sleepless nights.  Realistically, experts say a good queen-sized set will cost at least $800.

Number five: big screen TV’s.  If you're investing in a television that's 50 inches or more, you're going to want it to last so stick with a reliable brand.

That same advice goes for computers, which gets us to number six.  Stick with a well-know brand and consider a warranty particularly with laptops since they're prone to break.

Number seven: athletic shoes.  Whether you're an avid runner or a leisurely walker, a reliable pair of shoes could prevent costly injuries.

Number eight: garbage bags.  Generic bags are thinner.  They don't hold as much.  And they're prone to break.  Who needs that hassle?

Number nine: diapers.  Generic brands may have the same absorbency, but parents will tell you they don't fit as well and they're more likely to leak.

Finally at number ten: knives.  Stick with the brand names -- they'll last longer and won't need to be replaced as often.
