68-turbine wind farm to be constructed in Somerset Co.

By Jen Johnson

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. --

One of the largest wind farms in Pennsylvania is on its way to being constructed in Somerset County.

The Twin Ridges Wind Farm will be construction in the Big Savage Ridge Area of the county and will span four townships: Southampton, Northampton, Larimer and Greenville. Work is under way to prepare the site and crews have been removing trees and clearing the way for access roads.

In all, 68 turbines will be erected. Once operational, the wind farm will make enough electricity to power 40,000 homes. It will take about 10 people working full-time to help run and maintain, and the project is expected to be complete in about a year.

The wind farm is expected to affect the local economy because all four townships will share up to $240,000 a year. The Berlin and Meyersdale school districts will split up to $93,000 annually, and Somerset County will receive up to $37,000 a year. In addition, locally, 200 people are expected to be hired to build the farm and about $5 million will be spend on construction materials like concrete, steel and fencing.

The company constructing it, EverPower Wind Holdings Inc., signed a deal with REpower USA to construct the Twin Ridges farm.

EverPower is heavily invested in Pennsylvania, with its largest office located in Pittsburgh. The company has a wind farm in Cambria County that has been operational since August 2009. A second farm in Cambria County -- EverPower's Highland North wind farm -- is expected to be up and running within weeks.
