8,000 Suffer From Diabetes

Cambria County —

Mary Jane Beam, of Johnstown, suffers from Diabetes.

"[Life] is very complicated, very confusing and very depressing," said Beam.

That is life for Beam. She has dealt with diabetes for 10 years. She suffers from Type 2 which is largely associated with those who are overweight. She is on medication and insulin and checks her blood sugar everyday. She now exercises and has to watch what she eats. Too much sugar in anything is not a good thing. Two years ago she suffered a stroke. Now, she worries about blindness.

For those at high risk, Beam said the first thing to do is lose weight if you can and exercise.

According to health experts, those who are overweight and inactive become insulin resistant, causing diabetes. Prevention is exercise and the right amount of carbohydrates. The effects of diabetes are heart attacks, stroke, kidney damage and blindness.

Jan Albert is a Diabetes Educator with the Conemaugh Health System.

"Diabetes is expensive. We find Diabetics are admitted to the hospital more often. So, there is the health care expense," said Albert.

Symptoms of Diabetes include fatigue, blurred vision, unexpected loss of weight and pain in your feet.
