92 Bedford County Workers To Lose Jobs

Workers at Cannondale Bicycle Corp. in Bedford County said they received notice that 92 workers will lose their jobs.

"We had a corporate meeting and they just told us jobs are going to be ending," said Eric Davis, who was one of the employees told last week their skills were no longer needed.

Last year, the bicycle corporation's parent company, Cycling Sports Group, announced it was moving its manufacturing arm out of Bedford County. At that time, Cycling Sports said it would use the Bedford County facility as a bicycle testing laboratory and for service. That move eliminated 200 positions and the most recent layoff notices are the final step in that transition.

Company officials said this does not mean the plant is closing, but employees said they aren't so sure.

"Time will tell, but I don't look for it to last more than a few years. It will be shut down completely," Davis, of Bedford, said.

At a time when jobs are already tough to come by, Davis said he doesn't know what will come next.

"I have no idea -- go to school maybe," he said.

Employees who received notices said the layoffs start July 2 and will be staggered through July 30.
