Consumer Investigation: Prescription Prices Vary

By Robin Taylor

Everyone knows that prescription drugs are expensive, but did you know, prices can vary widely?

It all depends on where you buy them.  Six News Consumer Investigator Robin Taylor uncovered four things shoppers need to know before filling prescriptions.

It is rather surprising, depending upon the pharmacy, the price of a drug can vary by $5, $10 even $50 or more.   And that's why experts said if you're on a long-term medication, shop around before buying.

There's a new website:  frugalpharmacies.com that can help compare prices.

Although not active in Western Pennsylvania, the site's price comparison in other cities will give consumers a good idea of what pharmacies charge.

To save money, here are some things to consider:  first, is the drug available in a generic?  If it is, you can save a lot of money.  Walmart, Sam's Club and Target offer $4 generics of many common medications and you can get the most common diabetes drugs for free at Giant Eagle.

Also, don't forget, independent pharmacies often charge less than chain stores.

Second, if it's a maintenance drug, get it in the mail.  Insurance companies offer better deals from mail order plans.

Third, buy in bulk.  It's cheaper that way.  See if your doctor will prescribe larger quantities.  It may lower your co pays and get you a discount.

Finally, if possible, reduce the number of prescriptions you're on.  At least once a year, talk to your doctor about what you're taking and whether you still need to take it.
