Alleged victim speaks out about Bishop McCort scandal

By Kerri Corrado

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

One man who attended Bishop McCort High School says Brother Stephen Baker abused him. He wanted to keep his identity hidden and is referred to as “Richard” in this article.

“He intimidated you and as the years progressed. You learned not to mention an injury because you didn’t want to deal with him,” said Richard.

“Behind the scenes he is a beast, a total beast,” he said

He said the abuse happened in the mid 90s at Bishop McCort High School, when Ken Salem was a coach.

He says he disagrees with the decision to remove Ken Salem as principal. Salem is on paid leave.

Richard calls Salem a role model. He believes Salem had no idea what was going on behind closed doors.

“Being molested by Baker was done in a one on one fashion and the coaches were not present in the locker room,” he said.

“I feel like Ken Salem right now is being a scapegoat in this matter,” Richard said.

Richard says people who were abused by Baker were too ashamed, too afraid to tell school leaders or adults.

“We knew what was going on to each other. As a coping mechanism, we joked about it,” he said.

Baker committed suicide in January. He left a note apologizing for his actions

“He took the easy way out and he escaped and that’s what gets me mad,” he said.
