Accusations Exchanged In 30th District Senate Race

ALTOONA —

Primary election day in Pennsylvania is just three weeks away, and one of the hottest races of the year is only getting hotter.

Tuesday morning, the war of words between incumbent state Sen. Robert Jubelirer and challenger John Eichelberger escalated in two separate news conferences.

Eichelberger called the meeting to dispute personal attacks he said Jubelirer has made against him. Jubelirer contends that Eichelberger is unable to perform effectively for the county.

Jubelirer claims that Eichelberger has had to abstain from county contract votes 102 times in the last five years because of a conflict of interest concerning the insurance company he owns. He said letters filed by Eichelberger regarding the conflicts of interest extend more than 72 feet in length.

Eichelberger denied that he is doing anything wrong, and pointed to others in public office who are in the same situation.

Meanwhile, Jubelirer's law firm is also being called into question. Jubelirer did not attend his campaign's new conference this morning, but his spokesman said he receives a $20,000 per year stipend for his law firm. He said that is not a conflict of interest since he doesn't practice law at the moment.

Eichelberger said even though he isn't doing anything wrong, he will hand over his insurance company if elected.
