Acid Rock Cleanup To Begin On I99

CENTRE COUNTY —

Long-awaited work on acid rock cleanup from the site of Interstate 99 construction in Centre County was expected to begin Friday after state environmental officials approved a permit for Penndot's plan to haul away about million tons of pyrite rock from the site near Skytop. The acidic rock, discovered three years ago, has halted construction on a mile and a half stretch of the highway and has cost the state an estimated $50 million. Penndot now hopes to have the highway completed by early 2008.
