Acid Rock Residents Look To Governor For Help

STRONGSTOWN —

Indiana County residents are outraged. While some believe they will stop PennDOT's plans to bring a million tons of fly ash to their county from Centre County, others have their doubts.

"I don't want it here... my idea is the problems up there... leave them there," said Indiana County resident Kathy Homer.

PennDOT has a contract pending with Robindale Energy Services that would truck up to 4,000 tons of acid rock to an old mine site.

The residents say they don't want to travel on roads with the trucks.

"We have Amish neighbors... I don't want to be on the road opposing the trucks in my car let alone in a buggy," said Homer.

They also worry the acid rock, which will be mixed with fly ash, will pose health problems.

"The dust from this fly ash... a lot of people have breathing problems... the dust will just fly off the trucks," said Homer.

The residents will take these concerns with them to a meeting with a representative from the governor's office on Monday.

"We are over 3,000 - this is going to get somebody's attention," said resident Della Jean.

Indiana County Commissioner Bernie Smith will join a group of township supervisors for the meeting with the representative from the governor's office.

Smith said the acid rock can be treated in Centre County.
