Addressing Affordable Housing Issue in Centre County

By Stef Davis

STATE COLLEGE, Pa

A home for the holidays is on the Christmas list for many in Centre County.

D.J. Liggett, Centre Region Planning, says, "We have within the last few months seen a closure of two mobile home parks and a fire at a hotel, which has displaced 225 families."

Most of those people are now searching for something difficult to find in this area--affordable housing. And so Sunday, the Affordable Housing Coalition met to raise awareness of the issue at hand.

Paull Spring, Affordable Housing Coalition, says "The impression you get from the street is there is no need that everyone here in middle class or upper middle class when really 15 percent are living in poverty."

Organizers say the mix of people living in Happy Valley and the surrounding regions is one of the reasons why affordable housing is so hard to find.

Liggett adds, "Between the suburban beautiful homes and student housing, we have a gap in the middle that we'd like to see filled."

Meeting leaders say the best solution for the affordable housing problem is community involvement, getting people out there to public meetings to voice their concerns.
