After Deadly Accident, Can Teen Speeding Be Stopped?

SOMERSET COUNTY —

Police confirm Tuesday, speed and a quick thrill contributed to a crash that left one teenager dead and four others hurt in Somerset County on Monday. On the same road earlier in the day, speed also contributed to an accident involving a teenage driver. But is there anything that can be done to put the breaks on teens?

The accidents happened on East Mud Pike Road, which is a hilly undulating road. It's roads like these that you have to drive the speed limit. But unfortunately many people don't obey the speed limits.

“All my friends speed. I usually don't like to drive with my friends,” says 18-year-old Chad Dillon.

Chad has been driving for 2 years and he admits he sometimes speeds.

“When I get on the highway or something, everyone around me is speeding... try to stay up with the flow,” adds Chad.

Chad says his decision not speeding a lot comes from the fear of an accident or death, like the one Monday on East Mud Pike that killed 17-year-old Michael Coddington of Berlin.

Chad says he also got schooling on how to drive. He took both the classroom and on-road drivers education.

“The ones we have, we control them... if they go faster than the speed limit, we slow them down... the problem is we don't have everyone for drivers ed. It's not mandatory,” says Drivers Ed Teacher Dave Lichliter.

Dave says teens aren't the only ones speeding. He says adults are also to blame. He says a quick fix to speeding is more police trolling for speeders, but he believes there is a better way. Dave has taught more than 5-thousand students how to drive. One student died in an accident similar to Mondays, in that speed was a factor. He feels drivers safety training should be mandatory in both the classroom and on the road.
