Age Spot Products Tested

When it comes to your skin, the sun can be your worst enemy. "Believe it or not, age spots are not caused by age," says Alyssa Hertzig, Beauty Editor, Good Housekeeping. "They're actually caused by the sun. "

There are so many products out there that promise to fade spots, so Good Housekeeping teamed up with Dr. David Goldberg, a dermatologist from New York City, and found two that really work. Chemists at the Good Housekeeping Institute used a machine called the Visia to analyze pigmentation. Murad Age Spot & Pigment Lightening Gel did a great job, according to the testers and Dr. Goldberg.

"The reason the Murad product performed well is because it actually contains some products that are often used in dermatologists' offices," says Dr. Goldberg. "That is, it contained a hydroquinone, which is a bleaching agent, and also glycolic acid, which works wonderfully on the skin."

A second product, Good Skin Alll Bright Spot Treatment, also did well. "The Good Skin treatment is a mix of glucosamine, mulberry root and yeast extract, and although it didn't lighten as dramatically as the Murad product did, testers definitely saw results," says Hertzig.

You can also try a laser treatment to zap spots. "Laser treatment allows us to be very selective in how we remove brown spots. You shine a beam on the skin. It is absorbed by the brown spots, and we remove the spots, sometimes all in one session," says Dr. Goldberg.

The cost of a laser treatment is about $500 per session for lasers on specific spots and $1,000 per session for a laser called a Fraxel. The Fraxel is used for all-over improvement of substantial pigmentation. And a final note: many laser treatments for age spots will also help with wrinkles.
