Aleve Alternatives

Windber —

There are some over the counter topical creams you can take for aches and pains. But a lot of people are actually going with non-traditional therapies instead. Windber Medical Center has an entire area devoted to Integrative Medicine. They see a number of people, from age 2 to 82, who come in with aches and pains. But those people are looking for natural healing instead of medicine. There are many different kinds of acupuncture, relaxation techniques and compressions, many of which are used with aroma therapy. The medical professionals at Windber say they can have the same effect as Aleve or Naproxen.

Jean Brinker is a Nurse in the Integrative Health Department at Windber. She tells Channel 6 News, "Whenever you're in a state of relaxation, the body is able to heal itself better. So the essential oils that you were using help the person to relax. It helps the muscles to relax so they're not tense and tight and pulling."

Everyone is different when it comes to these therapies. You can do some at home. Others must be done at the hospital in sessions. An acupuncture treatment can take a couple of hours and cost a couple hundred dollars.
