As has become a local tradition, families throughout the Alleghenies prepared Monday to ring in the new year in a non-alcoholic setting.

In Johnstown, Celebrate Johnstown 2008 will kick off at 6 p.m. at several different locations including three different downtown churches, the library, the Central Park complex and Central Park itself.

This will mark the third year for the celebration. Special activities include music, dancing and sleigh rides. Other activities include:

6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.: Jazz In Your Face performance at the First Presbyterian Church

8:15 p.m. to 9 p.m.: Sherry Lynn's Ballroom Dancing at the Central Park Complex

6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.: Puppet show for kids at the Franklin Street Methodist Church

7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.: Storytelling hour at the community room of the Cambria County Library.

Altoona also has many events planned for its New Year's celebration such as the annual holiday lights along the lake at Lakemont Park. Also, starting at 5 p.m., the Hollidaysburg YMCA will sponsor a twilight run or walk through the lights. Participants can either make two loops around the lake or take part in the 3-kilometer run through the holiday lights.

In State College, a full slate of events includes music of all types, carriage rides, and a live reindeer display. One of the most popular activities was under way Monday afternoon as ice sculptors carved 200 blocks of ice along Allen Street.

The activities kick off with the Penn State men's basketball team taking on Lehigh at the Bryce Jordan Center at 1 p.m.
