Altoona Area Public Library Reducing Hours

Board members with the Altoona Area Public Library have reduced to reduce hours from 65 to 50 effective Sept. 1.

The 11 members call it a big blow to folks in the area, especially since they've seen a 20 percent in patrons.

Executive Director Debbie Weakland said it was hard to make the decision because they're only speculating what cuts could be made to the state budget.

Weakland said they're preparing for the worst since they've already started their new fiscal year operating on 65 hours.

The biggest fear is to fall into a severe deficit, Weakland said.

But all the board members agree many will suffer.

Weakland said more people are relying on libraries for internet access, searching for jobs or cash saving tips in a tight economy.

She adds children in school, which starts Aug. 31, rely on research materials at the library and a quiet place to study.

As far as layoffs go, Weakland said they will come with time.

"We hope we won't have to lay anybody off," Weakland said. "That will come more as we sit down as the department heads to decide once we figure out what each department can do and what they need to do."

Library officials county-wide are planning a protest if the budget impasse continues through Labor Day Weekend. They're planning on shutting down all the libraries for one day and posting the numbers of elected officials for people to call and complain.

The library hours, effective Sept. 1 are: Monday 10a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday four hours to be determined and Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
