Altoona Power Surge Disrupts Traffic Signals

A number of traffic lights were out in Altoona on Wednesday due to a power surge.

Officials said the problem stems from a fire last week at a substation in the Juniata area. Crews put up a temporary structure to restore residents' power, but on Wednesday power sporadically has gone out since 10:30 a.m.

Traffic lights on 17th Street, 6th Avenue and Union Avenue were out, and Altoona police were directing traffic in some locations.

Crews said multiple substations were affected. Stay with Channel 6 News and WJACTV.com for continuing coverage as details become available.
