Altoona Shooting Latest

Altoona —

The owner of Trims and Styles Barber Shop tells Channel 6 News, the suspect entered the shop around closing time Wednesday wanting a hair cut. The owner says when they turned him way, he left and came back, only this time with a 45 caliber handgun.

David Rainey, a disc jockey for Q94 across the street, was on the air at the time and says when he heard the gun shots he jumped up and saw two men fighting on the sidewalk. He immediately dialed 911. The owner of the shop tells us, the barber, 30 year old Brock Bantum, fought back and was able to get the gun from his attacker and gave him a pretty good beating as well.

Rainey says after the struggle, the suspect fled down 5th Avenue Alley and Bantum made his way around the corner to the Knickerbocker Tavern where customers there attempted to control the bleeding. Rainey says at one point during the struggle, a random driver looked like they were going to stop and help.

"A couple of cars went by and one slowed down like it was going to help. The guy on top went over to the car. The other guy, the shooter, took off down the alleyway and the car sped off and kept going," says Rainey.

Rainey says he suspects the driver of that car might have been scared off. The owner says Bantum was shot once in the stomach and once in the arm. Both bullets went strait through. There is some good news though. Bantum is doing much better, the owner tells us, and may return to work as early as next Tuesday.
