Altoona Teen Receives National Award

James Smith has grown up, spending his free time volunteering at the domestic abuse shelter in Altoona.

Now his efforts haven't gone unnoticed.

Smith recently gave a tour to a group of women from the VFW in Duncansville. They were so impressed by the 15-yearold they nominated him as an Outstanding Young Volunteer for Pennsylvania.

Smith received that award Thursday, along with a $5,000 bond. He also learned he won the national title and heads to Phoenix, Ariz. in August to claim his award.

Aside from academics and volunteering, Smith is also a junior volunteer firefighter for the Newberg Fire Company. He's on track to get his EMT certification by December. He also works part-time at Lakemont Park

Smith also has a 2 year-old-son.
