Alum Bank Company Looking To Expand

Dustin Troutman of Creative Pultrusions says he believes 2010 will be a good year.

Hill and Smith Holding PLC bought the Alum Bank company last year.

Troutman, the company's director of marketing and product development, said they now have more money behind them and the officials at Hill and Smith are pushing for more expansion abroad.

He told WJACTV.com he's seeing a demand for their fiberglass utility poles.

The poles are a "green" alternative to the traditional wood poles because they don't leak chemicals.

The poles also don't attract termites or woodpeckers.

While the poles are a third of the weight and provide the same function, selling them is difficult because they're three or four times the price.

On the plus side, the poles are expected to last 50 to 80 years.

The the plant can employ up to 180 employees during their busy season.

And because they were recently purchased by Hill and Smith, Troutman said that number can change.

"The more we can sell of course, the more employees we will need to manufacture the profiles," he said. "There's a lot of money behind us now for us to go after these markets and our goal is to develop the market throughout the world."

Troutman said they're already shipping poles to Africa, Australia and Canada.
