The Sipesville Fire Hall, packed with residents of America's County Thursday, celebrating their honorable title.
Jim Spangler of Somerset says, "This is the greatest county in the world. Never leave it in the summertime, spring, or fall, and also winter."
A kick-off party was held Thursday at the Sipesville Fire Hall, officially announcing the title of America's County, granted to Somerset...everyone at the event says it's all about the people.
C.S. Ickes of Boswell says, "How many people in this county served in World War II, the Korean War, and all these different wars and a lot of good veterans in this county".
Mark Schweiker, former Pennsylvania Governor says, "It's suggestive of rally spirit and being neighborly and supportive of each other and caring and capable of great accomplishment and when you stop and think about it, all those things are associated with the remarkable mine rescue that happened some years back."
As Thursday is the third anniversary of the amazing rescue at the Quecreek Mine, three miners came to the event, showing their support for the county who supported them during one of their most trying times.
John Unger, one of the rescued miners says, "It's still fresh. I don't think it will ever go away. I really don't. I think it's something we'll live with until the day we die."
It's a day many across the nation will never forget and it all happened in Somerset County, a place where residents pull together no matter what the situation.
Ethel Rayman of Sipesville says, "We have very good people here and they're all helpful and neighborly and just a good community."
Organizers hope to make this an annual event and get even more residents out to celebrate their nationally known home.
