Another Local Food Pantry Short On Supplies

Another local agency that traditionally lends a helping hand to those in need during the holiday season is in need itself.

The St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank is one of many local food pantries that are short on supplies due to a lack of state funding.

Bruce Becker, director of Food For Families, said more people are in need this year that in the past. He said volunteers are serving about 5,000 people a month at the Johnstown Food Kitchen, and with the decrease in funding, St. Vincent's is actually losing about $1,000 a month.

In Cambria County, state funding was cut by $14,000. Now, Becker said a $10,000 grant has expired. Together, he said the combination is devastating.

Becker said he has already met with representatives from Rep. John Murtha's office and he plans to meet with Sen. Wozniak this week to find says to lower the cost of produce and find other sources of funding.

Becker said if the trend continues the Johnstown Food Kitchen could eventually have to cut hours.
