Answers To A Deadly Gas Leak

Clearfield County

A natural gas leak and house explosion in Clearfield County killed two people last month. Now national fuel officials announced preliminary findings that show faulty workmanship could be what caused the leak.

Neighbors came to the meeting in hopes of getting an answer to why a fusion joint in a natural gas line broke. Finally, they got a preliminary answer.

Dr. Michael Wyler, a gas expert says, For whatever reason there was this - there was this improper fusion, basically the bottom of the pipe was inadequately fused and the plastic hadn't melted and run together as it was supposed to do. So that was their preliminary findings. I'm not sure what they're going to write in the report, but that's what we saw when we were there. National fuel traced the work back to a former employee, but said they believe it was an isolated incident, because other fusion joints done by the same worker were done correctly.

Annamarie Cellino of National Fuel says, we are going to do some digs of this employee some testing, samplings of this employee's fusions in the area. We will go through our records and find fusions that he performed and test them.

The results presented tonight are preliminary. The National Transportation Safety Board will release a final report in 12 to 18 months.
