Apartment Owners Brace for State Patty's Day

By Erin Calandra

STATE COLLEGE, Pa

Dozens of State College businesses are closing its doors this Saturday as part of a plan to curb the student created holiday "State Patty's Day" and now the focus for officials is controlling the parties in downtown apartments.

The people who manage those apartment buildings are bracing for this weekend.

Many are concerned that the bar closures may create more parties in their buildings, but they say they are prepared.

The owner of Associated realty, a property management company that takes care of several downtown high rises says he is worried about this weekend. “We're concerned about our students we're concerned about their safety, we're concerned about under-age drinking and also our property being damage.” So he's been working with the police and Penn State for more than a month now to keep State Patty's Day under control.

They've hired extra security to patrol the buildings, they've sent out a letter to tenants explaining the repercussions of a wild party, and one key tool is their $700,000 security system. "The cameras are a large deterrent from problems escalating."

Yes, the cameras are recording, they can snap pictures, and they do send them to the police.

Not all property managers are worried, Patricia Slagle from the pointe, an apartment complex further out of town says they will also have extra security, but no more than a regular football weekend.
