Are Local Manufacturing Jobs Declining?

Somerset County —

Crane Manufacturing closed down operations on Saturday and Meyersdale Manufacturing is to close on Wednesday. So you might think the manufacturing industry isn't doing so well in Somerset County, but it seems that's not the case.

Crane officials say it is cheaper to send product overseas to manufacture than to keep it in-house. Touring Rockwood Manufacturing today, Congressman Bill Shuster says the playing field with foreign competition has to be leveled. He feels our in-house companies are over taxed, over regulated, and expensive health care helps make the decision to go to another country easier.

For some though, the attitude is still strong when it comes to manufacturing in Somerset County.

"You don't see that often reported, but people are adding jobs and where you hear of a closure, there are probably right now two or three people adding jobs. So I think it might be better than what you normally hear on the news," says Rockwood Manufacturing President Bill Gurzenda.

Nick Felice, of the Somerset County Economic Development Council, says that although the two plants are closing, he feels manufacturing in the county is stable, saying a couple plants will be opening or expandingin the county with in the next year. He is hopeful that will create 100 to 200 new jobs.
