Area first responders meet for meth lab training

By Melanie Gillespie

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. —

Area first responders met in Somerset County to brush on training for meth labs Tuesday night.

Somerset Fire Chief Jim Clark said in his 30 years of being in the business, he never thought he would have to train on how to respond to drug labs.

It may not be wanted, but it’s training that’s become essential.

It couldn’t have come with better timing for Somerset County.

"That is probably what got us all together tonight... because of what happened in the borough,” Clark said.

Clark was one of the first responders called to Vincent Avenue in Somerset Borough in January when police found a suspected meth lab inside a home.

"State police and us found that it was essential we have another class again,” Somerset County Hazmat Team Chief Pete Barnhart said.

65 area first responders – from police to fire, EMS and hazmat -- gathered at Somerset Volunteer Fire Department for the training.

The training isn’t the most terrifying part behind the call, but the fear knowing that a drug like methamphetamine is moving right into their backyard.

Chief Clark urges neighbors to stay vigilant and if anything suspicious appears, to contact emergency officials.
