Area Home Damaged In Morning Fire

JOHNSTOWN —

Quick work by fire crews prevented more serious problems during a morning house fire.

The fire started at around 10 a.m. Tuesday at a home on First Street in East Conemaugh. The owner said he awoke to the smell of smoke and called for help. Several volunteer fire companies responded and were able to contain the blaze and keep it from spreading to nearby homes.

At this point, officials believe the fire started in the basement near the furnace, but the cause is still unknown.

Brian Feist of the Conemaugh Fire Department said, "Luckily, they found the fire in the early stages."

The majority of smoke damage was confined to the basement and first floor. Though not a total loss, damage is estimated at thousands of dollars.
