Back To School Speeders

Cambria County —

Coming back from summer vacations means getting back in the habit of going 15 miles per hour in school zones. But what Channel 6 News found with our radar gun, is that many people seem to be having a hard time remembering that.

42 miles per hour, 38 miles per hour...we even found cars going as much as 50 miles per hour along Route 422 in front of the Central Cambria schools. Normally those speeds are average for the road since the speed limit is usually 45 miles per hour, but with school back in session drivers are supposed to slow down to 15.

"I think coming from the highway they sort of forget the schools are there and through the Summer, the lights aren't flashing. I think they tend to forget," says parent Tammy Fox.

In the 45 minutes we stood along the road with the radar gun, we couldn't find one driver actually going the speed limit. Interestingly, the speeds starting falling when drivers realized we were there.

Some parents tell us they don't think back to school time is causing the speeding. It's a problem all year round.

"They don't pay attention even though they have signs and everything," says parent Margaret Wadding. "I think it's a problem all the time. It doesn't matter if school is in or out."

Incidentally, while we were using the radar gun, we even found some school buses speeding, one of which was going 38 miles per hour.
