BEAVERDALE, Pa. —
New details have emerged on a heartbreaking- homicide case in Cambria County:. The man accused of killing a 22-month-old girl was ordered to stand trial Thursday on homicide charges.
Police said Patrick Burkett was babysitting the little girl. When her mother returned home, she found her unresponsive. Doctors said she died from extreme abuse.
State police said Burkett told them he was with the child all day and nothing happened. He said she was perfectly fine and playing like normal. But the next day during another interview, police said his account just didn't match up. In fact, they said he changed his story not once, but it least 10 different times.
Police said he gave excuses for the toddlers' injuries ranging from, she slipped and fell, to the dog knocked her over, even that they were playing and he fell on top of her.
Police said a few family and friends had stopped by during the day he was babysitting, but he was adamant he was with the child the whole time and nothing happened.
Doctors at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh said the child died as a result of abusive head trauma. The coroner ruled it a homicide. That's when police arrested Burkett.
"He said even though there were some people that came to visit, including his parents and his ex-girlfriend, that none of those people were at any point alone with her," said Cambria County assistant distrinct attorney Elizabeth Penna. "He said he was the only one alone with her at that time."
"There was no direct linkage between him and these charges involved," said assistant public defender Patricia Moore.
Burkett's defense team told 6 News that he was questioned by police a couple of times without them being present, and they plan to file a motion to get hiBurkett's statements thrown out.
A judge ordered Burkett to stand trial.
