Bedford Co. Homicide Suspect Remains In Maryland Prison

Days after a Bedford County man was found shot to death in his home, the man suspect of killing him remains in a Maryland prison.

Mark Shirey is accused of killing 49-year-old Michael Wayne Simpson inside Simpson's Cumberland Valley Township home Sunday night.

The Bedford County district attorney said Simpson was dating Shirey's ex-wife, the same woman who discovered Simpson was shot.

Neighbors told WJAC-TV they think it was a crime spurred by jealousy, but investigators would not comment on a motive. Officials said Simpson and Shirey knew each other, but did not answer many questions because the investigation is open.

"The people in the community are not in any danger as a result of this incident. We want to let that be known. But at the same time, we have to protect the integrity of the investigation as we proceed forward and close those gaps. It is a competing interest, and I apologize," said Bedford County District Attorney Bill Higgins.

As of Thursday, the district attorney was still trying to extradite Shirey from Maryland, where Shirey is being held on suspicion of stealing a car last week.

Once Shirey is brought to Pennsylvania, he will be charged with criminal homicide, burglary and other crimes, the the district attorney said. Higgins said Shirey could be extradited as early as Friday but it could take up to 90 days.
