Bedford Co. safe shelter closes its doors

By Maria Miller

EVERETT, Pa. —

A local agency that helps victims of domestic violence and other crimes is closing its shelter. As happens in many agencies, personnel at Your Safe Haven told 6 News they're being forced to do more with less. After 16 years in Bedford County, the agency said funding cuts are to blame.

The staff members at Your Safe Haven told 6 News they can't believe it's come to this: closing the doors on their safe shelter. The agency said it will continue to provide services to victims of crime and abuse, but said it's going to be a challenge.

"We've seen funding continually decrease while other funding levels have maintained their level area of funding," said Jeanee Mallow, executive director. "(That's) good news, however operating costs keep going up, insurances keep going up and so forth."

Their shelter, the Mary Jane Mitchell House in Everett, Pa. is, for the most part, already boxed up. The doors are locked and the two staff members have been laid off. The agency's office will remain open to provide services, but Mallow said finding shelter for victims in Bedford County will be a challenge.

"We will still continue to provide that seamless approach to services and we will provide shelter through a different venue for victims," said Mallow. "It just won't be through our facility that we've operated for 16 years."

It's assistance Mallow said all victims of crime are entitled to under the law.

"If you take the money away to provide those services, how are they going to get the help they need," said Mallow.

Already this year, Your Safe Haven has helped over 800 adults and children.

"That's pretty high," said Mallow. "And it seems like the need keeps going up and the funding keeps decreasing."

The agency said it's very thankful to the Bedford community for all the assistance provided over the years, and said it's hopeful the donations will continue  into the future.
