Bedford County —
"On the way to the scene we could see the smoke over the mountain. You could tell the home was completely engulfed in flames," says Shawnee Valley Fire Chief, Tom Wertz.
More than 50 firefighters worked to contain the blaze at the home on Anderson Road, which started around 3 pm Wednesday. While they were on the scene, Wertz says they heard reports that someone was inside but the flames prevented anyone from entering the home.
"There's no way we could have gotten in," says Wertz. "The building was already starting to collapse."
Fire crews worked until the early morning hours to put out the hot spots enough so a cadaver dog could be brought in. That's when the body was discovered. The property is owned by Dennis Beal, but it's unclear at this point whether or not he's the victim. The State Police Fire Marshall is still investigating.
