Bedford County Residents Claim Unfair Property Assessments

BEDFORD, Pa. —

A long over due property reassessment caused a buzz in Bedford County last year. This year things are going a lot smoother.

The reassessment board took hearings throughout the week for people questioning the assessment of their property.

Officials said the best way to get the correct value is to get a private assessor to evaluate the property in question.

Chief tax assessor Melissa Border said, "If they present an appraisal that's normally what the board will go with they'll look at that value opposed to what is the current."

Board members will take that assessment into consideration and most likely will lower the property value, saving land owners money.

Border wants to clear up another confusion. The appeals hearing does not involve changing the millage on property taxes, the hearings can only change property values.
