Bedford County Shooting Victim Had Protection Order Against Spouse

Police said a woman slain outside of her workplace had a protection from abuse order against her estranged husband.

John Gerholt, 38, is accused of shooting and killing his wife of six years outside of the McDonald's where she worked.

John and Karen Gerholt have three children together and were separated. Police said John Gerholt recently violated a PFA order.

The shooting happened outside of the restaurant in Snake Spring Township on Route 30 Sunday night. Police said Karen Gerholt was standing near her car when she was shot to death. Investigators recovered what they believed to be the murder weapon and recovered several shell casings from the parking lot.

A witness told police John Gerholt was kneeling over Karen Gerholt's body saying "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I'll get some help."

Police still aren't saying how many shots John Gerholt fired at his wife, witnesses told police they heard two shots go off when they saw John Gerholt running across the parking lot of the McDonald's his wife worked at.

John Gerholt was arrested at the scene and charged with criminal homicide. District Attorney Bill Higgins told WJAC-TV Gerholt might be facing the death penalty.

"There was an active PFA against him. He committed a homicide and that's an aggravating circumstance and we're certainly condsidering invoking the death penalty in this case," said Higgins.

The district attorney's office and state police said John Gerholt was driving a black and red 1991 Ford F-150 at the time of the killing. Investigators were still determining a timeline of events and asked any witnesses who were near the Bedford Square Plaza to call state police at 623-6133.
