Bedford Jail Bringing In $40,000

Bedford County officials are bringing in 10 times the amount of revenue compared to previous years within the past few months after they started accepting state inmates at the county jail.

The jail has been bringing in about $40,000 a month. It used to make $2,000-$4,000 a month.

The program is part of the Department of Corrections' initiative to help relieve overcrowding in state facilities.

Warden Daniel Keen in Bedford County said his jail can house up to 185 inmates.

Right now, he has 31 inmates. The state has agreed to give the county $47 per inmate each day.

The inmates are considered level 2, meaning they're minimum to medium inmates and close to being paroled.

The prison in Camrbia County and jail in Indiana County are also participating in the program.

Keen said the program cuts costs for residents and his goal is to bring in $1 million next year.
