JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —
An estimated 300 people with ties to or interest in Johnstown's Bishop McCort High School jammed Richland Fire Hall on Monday night in search of answers about sex abuse allegations against a man who was a trainer there in the 1990s.
A newly created group called Friends & Families of Bishop McCort organized the meeting
The school was thrown in the spotlight recently for the scandal involving Brother Stephen Baker, who worked at Bishop McCort in the late 1990s and is accused of abusing dozens of student-athletes. Baker committed suicide in January, after the allegations became public.
Many of those who attended Monday's meeting wanted to show their support for the school's principal, Ken Salem, who was placed on administrative leave Friday. Others wanted to know how that decision was reached by the school's board of trustees.
Still others called for an open dialogue involving its member, Bishop McCort trustees and the diocese about the growing number of allegations against Baker and how he came to be a trainer at the school.
"We need to stick behind our principal first and foremost, but at the same time we need to stay together as a school and unify together to move forward," said Gap Barbin, senior class president.
Michelle Beblar an alumna and parent of a Bishop McCort student, said, "And we pray for everybody to lead us down the right road and we pray for the teachers who are under stress and they're trying to comfort our kids."
Members of the group said their mission is to focus on the board and student body in order to preserve the tradition of Bishop McCort.
Attorney Tim Burns, who is providing legal help to the group, said he'll call for meeting with the trustees in the near future.
