Officials Weighing Pros And Cons

Education and religious officials are weighing the pros and cons of possibly moving Bishop McCort High School out of Johnstown.

McCort officials originally said no to the move, but have they changed their minds, deciding to look into the possibility of moving from Johnstown to Richland Township.

The director of education for the Altoona-Johnstown diocese is quick to point out, there is no proposal or plan to move Bishop McCort yet.

Talks are in the very initial stages to move the school to the Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center in Richland Township, about 10 miles away. Vo-Tech administrators recently asked McCort to consider the move, hoping to ensure financial stability of the Vo-Tech by leasing out space their students don't use anymore.

McCort administration and catholic leaders met once to discuss pros and cons and the director of education says it's too early to be able to say what the benefits could be.

Several McCort students said no to the move.

Caitlin Basile, a Bishop McCort student says, "I don't like the idea because the school's been spending a lot of money lately to try and fix up the gym and we just bought a new lot to make more parking spaces. So, at this point, after all the money we spent after fixing this place up, it's really not a good idea to move up to Vo-Tech."

Vo-tech administrators say McCort is only one of many entities that could move into the building. Again, local Catholic and McCort leaders say they're nowhere near making a decision.
